In August, I waited patiently for the first run of my hard and soft cover books to arrive. Five years ago, I completed my first manuscript, an arduous but accelerating endeavor that pushed me into attempting a second project. Needing major revisions, both manuscripts still slumber in desktop publishing; but From Faith To Faith, my third attempt at creativity was finished. This baby was about to be born, no longer a “dream deferred,” or mom’s “hobby.” Mid month, the books were delivered and after the initial celebratory excitement ended, stark reality took its rightful place and forced me to get busy! My ministry/business was incorporated and had a name, M. Lyn Walker, Inc. At the end of August, Dwayne and I took a long planned vacation to Alaska with eight close family and friends and I came home energized and tingling with expectancy, truly understanding the tremendous responsibility I have as an ambassador for Christ. Expectations were high. M. Lyn Walker, Inc. had to be treated respectfully and professionally in order to glorify God the Father. Focused, I went to work.
September was a blur of activity! A business without inventory isn’t a business; so five hundred books were ordered and twenty-three tan boxes filled with contemporary faith based solutions were soon stacked in my finished basement. Now with inventory readily available for sale, I began planning my October travel schedule. With a large extended family to draw from, I asked a few of my closest relatives and friends to host events in their hometowns. Book signings were quickly booked in Chicago, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Detroit. Next, I opened business-banking accounts. I then hired a marvelous graphic designer who turned my scribble scrabble and random ideas into marketing magic. She quickly whipped pluggers and invitations into existence. Business cards and stationary soon followed. A trade show banner came home and was placed between tan cardboard boxes and stacks of flyers. All waited patiently for the first affair.
But I must admit creating my Facebook fan page was the highlight of the month! With bifocals perched vicariously on the bridge of my nose, I plodded through directions I’m sure my four-year-old grandson could have comprehended in half the time! A social media virgin, it took me three hours to create that page. When I finished, I called dear friends and announced my success. Applause and titillating laughter greeted the announcement. My adult children moaned and sighed! I had embarrassed them, yet again! And let’s not forget, besides getting M. Lyn Walker Inc., up and running, I still had other obligations to meet and a home to manage. Dependent on iron supplements, and NO, I’m not kidding, the month ended as intensely as it began and I even nudged into the twenty-first century, not bad for a grandma.
Lastly, I thanked the Father for giving me the gift of creativity! Think about it, He made all of us in His image and since He’s the master creator, then we’re mini creators! Past fifty, I am finally using God given gifts for His glory and my personal testimony is touching the lives of His people. If you’re reading this blog, then you’re probably just a little curious about authorship or me and here’s a freebie. It is never too late to realize a dream. Even if you haven’t used your God given gifts with any consistency, they’re still there! Just resurrect those bad boys and get started. I did and THAT is truly a testimony!
Goodbye for now,
M. Lyn Walker
